Remedies for Hay Fever
Allium Cepa (Red Onion) All-c.
Guiding Symptoms:
1.PROFUSE (“Drips like a faucet”) NASAL DISCHARGE WHICH BURNS AND CORRODES NOSE AND UPPER LIP.
2.PROFUSE, BLAND LACRIMATION.
3.Worse: WARM ROOM, Wet feet. Better: Cool, open air.
4. Hayfever is usually worse in August (hottest month). (GV)
5. Violent sneezing
Modalities:
Worse: WARM ROOM, Wet feet, singing, damp weather, spring, evening, cucumber, salads.
Left sided or goes from left to right.
Great sensitivity to flowers, peaches (C)
Better: Cool, open air, bathing, motion
Desire for raw onions (GV), aversion to cucumbers (GV)
Psychology:
Indefinable anxiety (HR)
Sleepiness, mental dullness, lack of initiative (GV)
Very melancholy (C)
Fears pains will become unbearable, especially from pain in suppuration of fingers (C, HR)
Makes spelling mistakes (HR)
Confused and absent-minded , in afternoon after wine and coffee (HR)
Pathology:
Burning of the eyelids, nose, mouth, throat, bladder, skin.
Toothache better with cold air or cold washing. (C)
Neuralgic pains like a long thread (C)
Excessive non-excoriating lachrymation of the eyes (C), with redness of eyeball, after frequent sneezing. (A)
Nose completely obstructed by swelling of the mucosa. (C)
Colds after damp northeasterly winds.(C)
Dull headache with coryza (C) , ameliorates when the nose discharges freely.
Much sneezing; he inflates the lungs, raises himself on his toes, the gives a harty sneeze.
Tickling in the throat, with aching in the larynx (HR)
Severe laryngeal cough, which compels patient to grasp larynx, feels as if cough would tear it.
Notes:
· This remedy may cure up to one third of all acute allergic rhinitis cases (hay fever), at least for that season. Permanent cure requires a deeper remedy once the acute symptoms have been relieved. (RM)
· It should be mentioned that injudicious use of this remedy in common colds may in some instances suppress this minor annoyance only to precipitate acute asthmatic attacks or severe throat infections. (RM) In sensitive people (asthmatics), suppression of a cold will go to the lungs. It is a powerful remedy, be careful in using it. If you suspect a sensitivity, give a low dose C6 or LM. (GV)

· Mental state can deteriorate suddenly to a profound and passive insanity after a shock or mortification – the person becomes overwhelmingly sleepy and lethargic, unable to recognize people, total indifference to people around him, doesn’t understand the meaning of words, brain doesn’t function, making strange grimaces of gestures, foolish behaviour, walks in a strange way, misanthropy – if confronted with some kind of aggression, they simply go to sleep. Can still take perform the essential acts of living.

Ambrosia Artemisaefolia (Ragweed) Ambro
Guiding Symptoms:
1.Lachrimation and intolerable itching of the eyelids
2.Many forms of Diarrhoea, esp in summer. Also dysentery.
3. Respiratory tract in its whole length stopped up
Pathology
Eyes have smarting and burning pain, and lachrymation.
Sensation of nose and head as if stuffed up. Watery coryza, sneezing, watery discharge. Epistaxis.
Respiration: Asthmatic attacks and irritation of trachea and bronchial tubes
Cough: Wheezy. Some forms of whooping cough

Arundo Mauritanica (Reed grass) Arund
Guiding Symptoms:
1.Specific remedy for allergies involving the nose (hayfever)
2.Burning and itching inside nostrils, palate and conjunctiva (C)
3.Coryza, sneezing (DD: Arum-t)
4.Pain at the root of the nose or between eyes
5.Bluish mucous
6.Salivation
Psychology:
Lascivious ideas (definition: feeling or revealing an overt and often offensive sexual desire)

Nose: Pain at root of nose. Coryza with snuffling. In the beginning water runs from nose, later green mucous and thick white, slimmy masses, with sneezing, pieces of indurated greenish mucous. (C)

Euphrasia (Eyebright) Euph.
Guiding Symptoms:
1.HAY FEVER WITH ACRID LACRIMATION
2.Catarrhal affections of mucous membranes especially of eyes and nose
3.Profuse, acrid LACRIMATION and profuse, bland coryza.
4. EYES: burning, irritated; photophobia; eyes water all the time; intense blinking; inflammation of the conjunctival membranes ( incl lids and margins of the lids); sensation of dust in eyes; redness; swelling; ulceration; agglutination in the morning; tendency to accumulate sticky mucous on the cornea; opacity of cornea after injury to eye, ptosis
5.Cough with great lacrimation; cough only in the daytime (better lying, better at night in bed); cough with great expectoration
Modalities:
> being in the dark, open air, coffee, wiping eye/ winking
< warmth, sunlight, being indoors, wind, in evening, in bed (except cough > at night)

Peculiar:
- Aggravation after exposure to South wind
- Menses painful; flow only lasts an hour or a day
- Ammenorrhea with ophthalmia
- Gags when clearing throat in the morning; hawks up offensive mucous

Euphrasia used by Dr. C.W. Boyce in New York to treat an epidemic of measles with watery eyes and fluent coryza. (Nash) Useful for initial stages of measles with marked eye symptoms.

Essence: Restlessness with a compulsion to keep moving. Extremely restless and always moving fast with great intensity of impatience and complete inability to wait.

Case 1: Male, aged 28, severe allergic problems. Chronically blocked nose, paroxysms of violent sneezing and recurring colds. Excessive overweight and alcoholism. His mind would function only when he was moving – he couldn’t sit to do his office work, he had to keep moving, otherwise his mind would stop. A compulsive jogger – the only thing that kept him happy. Many brilliant ideas came to him only when he was in motion. His compulsion was to keep moving. Very hurried. Wandered constantly, from one end of the city to the other. Desire for travelling, mountain climbing, hiking, any activity involving walking or hiking. Extremely impulsive and erratic. Very impatient, hated to wait for anything. Quarrelsome. Lost friends because he became upset if they were late. Depressive states during which he was contemptuous of himself, self-destructive with overuse of alcohol and food and avoiding exercise completely. Impossible for him to hold down a job because of his quarrelsomeness. But his work would win awards – very intellectually sharp and creative. Suppressed his feelings and became totally introverted and reserved. History of hiding pain and injury from his parents, pretending that nothing was wrong with him. Dreams of riots, feeling trapped, unable to drive on or retreat, has to jump off a bridge to save himself. Remedy: Hist 200c Result: Sinus symptoms cleared up. Lost weight and stopped drinking alcohol. More patient and tolerant, less restless, less quarrelsome. Repeat of remedy after a relapse, again with good results.
Case 2: Male, age 57, high blood pressure, headaches, joint pains with much swelling, better by warm applications, and great sleeplessness. Wakes at 4:30, very restless to get his day started. Very impatient if newspaper is five minutes late. Full of energy and activity, always keeping himself busy. Very hurried, very industrious. Very difficult person to deal with – quarrelsome, excitable, irritable, very disputatious, unreasonable attitude. Picks fights over trifles. Very fixed and rigid in many ways – scrupulous and uncompromising about certain things. Very honest attitude, fixed ideas about how things should be done. Abrupt, impulsive, unconcerned about what others would say. Tremendous ability to comprehend and perceive things, very sharp intellect. Totally disconnected from his surroundings, 75% deafness, talks without even trying to listen to other person. Analysis: Extremely restless and always moving fast with great intensity of impatience and complete inability to wait. Remedy: Hist 200c Result: He needed one dose every 3 months when his impatience and restlessness was pronounced. Over a period of two years his restlessness has eased by 70-80%, and he is much less aggressive. Marked improvement I his headaches, blood pressure and joint pains, no need for allopathic medications any more. More willing to try to listen before communicating. Still doing very well.
Rosa Damascena (Damascus rose) Ros-d
Guiding Symptoms
Hay fever. Aremedy for the beginning of rose-cold when the Eustachian tube is involved, with some degree of deafness and tinnitus. (C)
